Why Rest Is the Ultimate Form of Self-Care
This is my favorite topic because I am no stranger to rest—I am quick to take a nap, lol. And if you ask anyone who knows me, they’d tell you that before I had my daughter, I was the queen of sleeping! I’m talking 12 hours a night without a hint of guilt. Sleep and I were the best of friends.
But when I had my daughter, everything changed. I stopped doing anything for myself. My entire focus was on her, and I didn’t even realize how much I was neglecting my own needs. My friends and family are actually shocked when they hear how often I rest now compared to before. But in all seriousness, rest is so much more than sleep. It’s one of the most essential yet overlooked forms of self-care.
In today’s fast-paced world, where productivity is glorified, and busyness is seen as a badge of honor, rest can feel like a luxury instead of a necessity. But here’s the truth: prioritizing rest is not lazy—it’s essential for your well-being. It’s how we recharge, refocus, and show up as the best version of ourselves for the people and things that matter most.
Why Rest Matters
Rest isn’t just about avoiding exhaustion—it’s about giving your body and mind the tender love and care they deserve. Without it, burnout creeps in quietly, stealing your energy, focus, and joy before you even realize it.
For a long time, I believed rest was for people who weren’t ambitious enough. I was in the thick of it—juggling full-time classes, a part-time job, and being a new mom. On top of that, I worked out five days a week because I thought I needed to push myself in every area of life to prove my worth. My days were a blur of early mornings, late nights, deadlines, and responsibilities. I told myself I could handle it. I told myself I had to handle it.
But it caught up with me. One day, I was sitting in my car outside of class, staring blankly at the dashboard. I couldn’t move. My body felt heavy, and my mind was blank, yet somehow overwhelmed. I realized that I had been running on autopilot, surviving instead of living. Even though I was showing up for everything on my to-do list, I wasn’t showing up for myself.
That moment was my wake-up call. I needed to rest—not just physically, but mentally and emotionally. I started making small changes: going to bed earlier, letting go of the guilt when I skipped a workout, and saying no to commitments that stretched me too thin. It wasn’t easy at first because I had conditioned myself to believe that resting meant slacking. But as I slowed down, I began to feel more grounded. My grades didn’t suffer, my relationships improved, and I realized my body was thanking me for finally listening.
Rest didn’t make me weaker. It made me STRONGER, more present, and better equipped to handle everything life throws at me. It taught me that pushing myself to the brink isn’t a badge of honor—it’s a recipe for burnout. And the best version of myself, for my daughter, my goals, and my own peace, is one that’s well-rested.

How to Embrace Rest
If you’re like me, you might need a reminder (or permission) to slow down. Here are some ways to incorporate rest into your life:
1. Prioritize Quality Sleep
Sleep is the most restorative form of rest, yet it’s often the first thing we sacrifice. If you’re a busy mama, you’ll resonate with my post Neglecting Yourself (Mamas), where I talk about the importance of taking time for yourself amidst the chaos of motherhood.
2. Take Mini-Breaks During the Day
Rest doesn’t always mean a full night’s sleep. Short breaks throughout your day can help you recharge and stay grounded. Step outside for some fresh air, close your eyes and breathe deeply, or stretch your body to release tension.
3. Practice “Active Rest”
Active rest involves engaging in restorative activities that relax your body and mind. This could mean taking a gentle walk, doing yoga, or even working on a creative hobby. One way to practice active rest is to focus on body kindness. If you’re working on appreciating your body more, check out my post Love the Skin You’re In for some inspiration.
4. Unplug for a Digital Detox
Our constant connection to screens can leave us mentally drained. Try setting aside intentional screen-free time each day, whether it’s during meals, before bed, or while spending time with loved ones. Disconnecting from digital distractions allows your mind to rest and be present.
Finding Peace Through Rest
Rest isn’t just about pausing—it’s about renewal. It’s creating the energy to reconnect with yourself and what matters most. By taking the time to rest, you’re reminding yourself that you deserve to feel energized, focused, and cared for.
Let this be your reminder: You don’t need to earn rest. It’s not a reward—it’s a necessity. Whether it’s a quick nap (my personal favorite) or a quiet walk in nature, make rest a PRIORITY today. Your mind, body, and spirit will thank you.
