Finding a Deeper Meaning Beyond the Word “Blessed”
I recently shared a post called Growing Closer to God with Devotionals, where I introduced some powerful devotionals to help deepen your faith and connection with God. Afterward, I felt inspired to answer the devotionals myself and share my reflections in a new post called Walking in Faith. I love the idea of being open and honest about my journey, and I hope it encourages you in yours.
As I reflected on my responses to these devotional prompts, I kept coming back to a feeling that the word “blessed” just isn’t enough. People who have so little by the world’s standards still feel blessed by God. Those who are struggling through sickness, who have lost loved ones, even those facing immense pain—they, too, feel blessed. And that’s why blessed doesn’t feel big enough for what I want to express. I’m more than blessed.
I remember feeling this way even as a child. I used to think God had a special “bubble” around me because I felt so protected, so deeply safe in His presence. Today, I understand I’m not any more special than His other children. He loves us all equally. But still, I feel beyond blessed. My life, my journey—it deserves more than that word. It’s a life full of miracles and moments that go beyond what words can capture.
Curious, I started to look up if there was a word for what I was feeling—something that went beyond “blessed.” I found words like favored, which suggests a special grace or privilege, and anointed, carrying a sense of divine purpose and protection. There was graced, for something undeservedly beautiful, and fortunate, which speaks to a deep gratitude for the precious things in life. Prospered felt right in a spiritual sense, capturing the feeling of thriving in contentment and joy. Or even divinely favored, which reminded me that every bit of this abundance is a gift from God.
I finally settled on overflowing. To me, it perfectly describes the feeling of living in God’s goodness that spills beyond what I could ever ask for. It’s more than having “just enough”—it’s feeling like His grace and blessings are pouring into every corner of my life, filling me up and leaving room to share with others.
I’m sharing this not to brag but to encourage you to share how God is working in your life. It’s important to tell people how good He is. Yes, I’ve written about the dark moments and the struggles, because those experiences help others feel less alone. But we also need to celebrate the joy, the happiness, and the blessings. So right now, let me say it loud and clear: GOD IS SO GOOD, and He has been so good to me!
I didn’t just win the lottery, and I don’t have everything I could ever want (though, nerdy confession, I’d love a pet dragon). I’m still carrying student debt, searching for the right job, and working on forgiving myself for past mistakes. Yet, my life is so good. Someone out there would trade places with me in a heartbeat. We take so much for granted. We forget that even in our darkest times, God is with us, bringing light and goodness.
Philippians 4:11
“Not that I was ever in need, for I have learned how to be content with whatever I have.”
For anyone who’s exhausted from getting up every few hours with a newborn, feeling drained by the chaos of a toddler, or struggling with the challenges of a teenager, remember—there are people who would give anything to have those experiences. Sometimes, we get so focused on the little frustrations and challenges of daily life that we forget to step back and recognize just how blessed we are. It’s easy to feel weighed down by the grind of going to work each day, but somewhere out there, someone is praying for the chance to provide for their family. Maybe there are things you wish you could change about yourself—your eyes, your legs, or any little thing you feel insecure about—yet there are people who don’t have those gifts at all and would give anything for what we take for granted.
It’s often those who seem to have lost the most who are filled with a deep, unshakable joy, gratitude, and love for God. They understand, perhaps better than anyone, how much worse things could be, and they find contentment in what they do have. Sometimes, we all need that reminder to look up, take in our blessings, and truly feel the goodness God has poured into our lives.
Even though my life isn’t perfect, it’s far from bad. I want to normalize sharing not just the tough times but also the great times. It’s okay to be proud of your life, no matter where you are. It’s okay to love the way you look, no matter what that looks like to others. If something brings you joy, celebrate it! If you’ve reached a personal goal, share it! Let people know how good God is. Let them know how blessed you feel.
I used to compare the feeling of Jesus’ love to the image of a girl running in a sunlit field, her face lit up with a huge smile. I still feel that way, but now I see it differently. Now, I picture a girl running in the rain, smiling just as brightly through the storm. God’s love is with us always, and there’s beauty in every part of our lives—even in the moments that aren’t sunny.
So with that, I’m choosing to rejoice in today, knowing that in the end, I have everything I need. And for that, I am more than blessed.
